There was an outline that I had in season 1 that was like halfway through the season where it was like they… it was basically just like a 20-minute parody of Labyrinth…. It’s just like Mabel goes into the labyrinth—it’s not THE labyrinth, it’s LIKE the labyrinth, but the whole thing is just jokes about the labyrinth. It’s like a meta-labyrinth. Like she rents Labyrinth, and Dipper’s seen it a million times, and he’s sick of it, and he keeps complaining during the movie, and she’s like “I wish the King of the Groblins would take my brother away so I could enjoy watching Labyrinth!” And then he gets sucked into the labyrinth, and then this David Bowie-like guy is like, “If you want to save your brother, you have to go through the maze!” and she doesn’t wanna save her brother, she just wants to hang out with the David Bowie guy. And, like, meanwhile Dipper has this B-plot where the reason he hates Labyrinth so much is that he’s scared of puppets but he’s afraid to admit it, like, he’s like, “That movie’s stupid, that movie’s stupid!” but really he’s terrified of puppets and he’s gotta get over his puppet fear. I thought it was hilarious, but the executives were like, “We don’t think anyone is going to appreciate this reference.
